plants make life better - listening and speaking

Step 1 Warm up

1. Show students several pictures of plants and ask them what they are.

2. Free talk: What is your favourite plant?

Sentence pattern: My favourite plant is     because      .

 

Step 2 Pre-listening

Explain the rules of the class: Students will obtain energy from the teacher, the provider of seeds, by finishing tasks in class. The certain amount of energy can be exchanged for the seeds from the teacher.

 

 

Step 3 While-listening

1. Extensive Listening

(1) Listen to the conversation and find out its topic. (Saving a dying plant.)

(2) Listen again and find out the answers to the multiple choices.

A. How long has the woman kept the plant?

a. One month.      b. Two months.       c. Three months.

B. What happened to the plant?

a. Its leaves are dried up.  

b. Its roots are too short.  

c. It gets too much water.

C. What is the real problem with the plant?

a. Its leaves have fallen.  

b. It gets too much sunlight.  

c. Its pot is not big enough.

2. Intensive Listening

(1)Listen carefully and judge whether the following statements are the advice the man gave.

It needs a little more watering. (T)

Re-planting it in a bigger pot. (T)

Keep it indoors. (T)

Avoid direct sunlight. (T)

Put it out in the morning. (F)

(2)Dictation: listen to the conversation and fill in the blanks, making the conversation a complete one.

3. Read the conversation together.

 

 

Step 4 Post-listening

1. Students need to underline some expressions that they see as important.

2. Presentation: Representatives of each group should present their favourite plants.

3. Watch a video clip about the afforestation achievements in the past few years.

4. Discussion: Discuss the importance of planting.

5. Exchange: Students can exchange their energy for seeds they want.

 

Step 5 Homework

1. Students need to summarize what they learn in the class.

2. Homework

(1)Students need to list some advantages of planting and film it into a vlog.

(2) The groups need to plant the seeds and record its growth every week, finally making it a brochure.
