1. Exploration of community outreach events

(1) T shows the pictures and asks the question “What community outreach events do these pictures show?”. Ss try to tell what community outreach events are shown in the pictures.

(2) T shows the following helping sentence structure “This picture shows the event of ... (community outreach event). People in the picture are doing ... (activity).” Ss choose from the given words and expressions and talk about the community outreach activities in the pictures. T offers help with vocabulary when necessary.

(3) T offers helping sentence structure such as “In the community outreach event of ... (event), people do ... (activity).” to help Ss wrap up the discussed community outreach events.

激活有关社区外展活动的词汇及背景知识,补充必要词汇及表达,克服词汇障碍、增强表达自信,通过设想社区外展活动,为后续阅读活动提供词汇和背景知识的基础。

2.  Brainstorming and discussion

(1) The teacher asks, “What other types of community outreach events do you know about?”, encouraging students to tell more community outreach events and activities.

(2) Ss use the new vocabulary and expressions to tell other community outreach events and activities. T organizes Ss’ responses on the board and supplements with additional expressions.

Introduction and prediction

Situation: How does technology affect our community? What else can a tech company do besides selling products in a community? Read on to learn how a tech company shows that technology is available to everyone.

(1) T leads Ss through the introduction to the text and encourages Ss to tell the their understanding of community outreach events.

(2) T introduces the main character, HiTech, and asks, “Why does HiTech carry out its outreach event in the community? What activities are there in the event?” Students make predictions. T writes Ss’ predictions on the board for later reference.

引导学生通过已有信息预测科技公司开展的社区外展活动及其目的,激发阅读兴趣,引起学生思考,引出语篇主题,为后续深入理解与讨论文本做好铺垫。

While-reading

1. Skimming and prediction checking

(1) Ss skim the text to check if they’ve made the right prediction of the purpose and activities of the outreach event.

(2) Ss tick out the correct predictions on the board.

(3) T presents the 5 expressions for the 5 segments of the outreach event in activity 1. T guides Ss to skim the 5 paragraphs and get the main idea of each paragraph by referring to the given 5 expressions. 

(4) T encourage Ss to tell main ideas of 5 paragraphs, using 5 expressions.

2. Careful reading and chart Filling

(1) Ss scan the text and then complete the summary chart by filling in the details of the five segments of the event.

(2) Ss present their answers and tell where the answers are located in the text. T and Ss check the answers together. Ss have a discussion and T gives explanations when needed.

3. Careful reading and exploration  

(1) T asks “What can HiTech and its employees gain from this event?” guiding Ss to pay special attention to the benefits HiTech and its employees can gain from the outreach event.

(2) Ss select the possible benefits in the table in activity 2, and T provides vocabulary support for comprehension.

(3) Ss review the text, select the possible benefits to the company and employees. T and Ss check the answers together.

4. Text analysis

(1) T briefly explains the key features of narrative texts, focusing on “time logic” and “direct quotes”.

(2) Ss read the text again and highlight sentences or phrases that demonstrate “time logic” and “direct quotes”.

(3) Ss share some of the examples with a partner, discussing the effect of these features on the overall narrative.

(4) T encourages Ss to sum up the features of the text and provides necessary guidance when needed.

1. Retelling

(1) T encourages Ss to retell the text to their partners by referring to the chart in activity 1.

(2) T invites a volunteer to retell the text to the whole class.

(3) T evaluates the volunteer student’s retelling and asks Ss to make comments on his/her performance.
