(1) How many sides are there in a debate?     Two.

Step 3 While-reading

1. Skimming: What is the order of this debate?

 ①The TV host introduces the topic and two speakers.

②Lin Shuiqing presents her points.

③Qian Liwei presents his points.

④Open the floor for discussion.

2. Scanning: What sides do Ms. Lin Shuiqing and Mr. Qian Liwei represent?

Lin Shuiqing: the environment

Qian Liwei: the economy

3. Careful Reading

(1) Read what Ms. Lin Shuiqing said and then answered the following questions:
①What happened because of chemical waste?
②What's the effect of water pollution?
③By how many times has the world's population increased since 1800? What's the population now?
④What has become a big problem?

(2) Ms. Lin Shuiqing’s suggestions: cut back on production/reduce the number of things we make and buy/recycle our waste/teach people ways of living that do not harm the environment

(3) Read what Mr. Qian Liwei said and then answered the following questions:
①When speaking of factories, what will people think of?
②How can a healthy environment and development be possible at the same time?
③Why does Qian Liwei think production should not be cut back?

(4) Mr. Qian Liwei’s suggestions:produce more things from recycled  materials/make better laws/pay a higher price for some things/pay higher taxes
