Step 1 Lead-in

1. Greetings

2. Show students a series of pictures of the unexplained and ask them the questions:

(1) Do you believe in the existence of the unexplained things? Why or why not?

(2) What other unexplained things do you know about?

  

Step 2 Pre-reading

1. Ask students to read the title of the text carefully, and then try to find out its feature

Feature: incomplete  

Article and be can be left out.

Ask students to try to summarize the features of the title of news:  brief/attractive/exact

2. Reading Strategy: reading a newspaper article

Ask one student to read this part, and figure out what should be paid attention to.

The broadest, most general information is given first, and then the details. The first paragraph, or the lead, gives the main idea and most important facts. When reading a news story, read the beginning very carefully.

Step 3 While-reading

1.Read the lead or the first paragraph, and find out the 6Ws.

   Who: a fifteen-year-old boy

What: went missing

When: three days ago

Where: Dover, New Hampshire

 Why: reports of strange lights in the sky and of aliens

How: receive great interest

 

2.Students need to find out what the second part (Para.2-7) is about by answering some questions:

What did Justin do with friends last Friday?

What did witnesses see?

What color are the aliens according to Kelly?

Why didnt Mrs. Foster believe her daughter?

Summary:

Kelly Foster thought her brother was taken away by aliens.

Mrs. Foster thought her son was spending the night with friends and became worried when he did not show up for the lunch.

Mr. Foster was working that night on his road construction job and he called the police.

 

 

3.Students need to find out what the third part (Para.8-9) is about by answering some questions:

   What happened to Mrs. Mavis Wood?

 Who was in charge of the case? 

Did he believe that Justin had been taken by aliens?

Summary:

Mrs. Mavis Wood thought Justin was taken away by aliens so that aliens would do research on him.

Detective Sam Peterson thought people sometimes make up stories, and that there was no hard evidence to prove it. He said they would not give up until found out what really happened.

 

4.Exercises:

(1)Students need to read the text carefully to find out the right order of the following events.
