About a half-mile behind our Minnesota farm lay a pond. In summer, my brother Harry and I would run through a stand of oak trees(橡树) to skip stones there. The pond wore a collar of black mud(一圈黑泥). It was not a place for swimming.

In late summer, the pond would be covered by a green and bubbly scum(起泡的浮渣). Sometimes a strong, unpleasant smell rose from it. We stayed away.

When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting place. One day when ice covered it, Harry said to me, “Try walking across.”

The ice looked solid. No water showed through it, but I hesitated. “Go ahead.” Harry urged. “Try it. You’re lighter than I am. If the ice holds, we can run and slide carefully on it. It’ll be fun.” I wanted to please Harry, and I thought about the fun of a long slide on the ice. I began to slide across the pond.

In the middle of the pond, the ice gave way with a sudden crack(裂缝)! I stretched out(伸展)my arms. The next thing I knew I was hanging on to the edge of a hole in the ice by arms outstretched on the ice. From my shoulders down I hung in icy water. I thought of the bottom of the pond. I knew it would be black and awful down there, full of mud and maybe rotting creatures.

I tried to climb out of the hole, but when I got a knee on the ice, it broke like window glass. Again and again I tried to get out. Again and again the ice broke into pieces. The hole widened. I was wearing a coat of heavy material. As it became completely wet, it dragged me down. I was tired of the struggle and rested with my arms stretched out on the ice.

I looked at Harry on shore. He seemed rooted to the spot. “I can’t get out!” I screamed when I caught some breath.

Through the ice

例如 “…run through a stand of oak trees(橡树) to skip stones there”,留心的同学会在后面“Harry跑开”时联想到Harry可能是去取树枝来救“我”;又如环环相扣的两个段首句,根据The moment I crashed through the kitchen door… Harry turned and ran from the pond.,可以知道Harry跑开是去取东西来救“我”的。

A possible version:

He turned and ran from the pond. Staring at his familiar figure out of sight, I wondered: “Is he running for help, or is he running away?” Disappointment and scare beat me out of breath. The icy water seemed to pierce my skin. I was anxious to climb out by myself, but in vain. After what seemed to be centuries of waiting, I was nearly about to give up when Harry stormed back with a large and black oak branch, “Grab it.” Flopping to his stomach, he pushed the branch before him and wriggled toward me. Stretching out my arms, I seized the oak branch with all my strength, crawled carefully out of the hole inch by inch and was eventually dragged out of the icy water by Harry. What a narrow escape! Then we stumbled home, with my clothes dripping(滴水)and my overshoes squishing(发出嘎吱声).

I crashed through the kitchen door, sobbing, mum rushed over. Taking off my coat and clothes from me, she gave me a quick bath and then nimbly wrapped a thick blanket over me to stop me from feeling cold; meanwhile she gave me a cup of milk to warm me up. I tearfully complained to her about all that had happened. Mum comforted me and blamed Harry for getting his younger brother into such a trouble. With his head dropping, Harry made an apology to me. I was temporarily relieved and decided to forgive Harry. Without his rescue, I would have died. But I would never forget the life-risking experience and never act so blindly again.
