I、Plot review

One night, Pip had an unexpected and unwelcome visitor, the convict in the churchyard. To Pip’s surprise, the real benefactor was the convict Magwitch, not Miss Havisham. Although Magwitch wanted to be with Pip, Pip tried to send him away and found lodgings for him because Pip disliked and felt disgusted with him. Magwitch told Pip his miserable life. He never had a home and was always in and out of prison because of stealing. Herbert found Compeyson was Miss Havisham’s lover.

IV、Structure and main idea+detailed understanding

Part 1(para1-18): Before Estella’s determination to marry Drummle, Pip went to Satis House to express his desperate love to her.

Part 2 (para19-20) :After midnight when Pip arrived home, he got a piece of paper revealing that Magwich had been found.

Part 3 (para21-41) :In Clara’ house, Pip along with his best friend Herbert came up with a way to help Magwich leave this dangerous place.

Part 4 (para42-52) :After Pip’s exercising on the river, he knew something about Miss Havisham’s business and Molly.

 

V.Detailed understanding

1. What contributed to Estella’s refusing Pip’s love?

Her living background and her cold and cruel personality.

2. What was Herbert’ plan to help Magwitch to leave the dangerous place?

They would take Magwitch down the river themselves and Pip would start to go up and down the river every day so that he wouldn’t be recognized.

3. Why did Pip expect Magwitch to refuse the escape plan?

Because he had changed a lot since Magwitch first arrived here.

4. What did Pip regard Miss Havisham’s business as?

He regarded the business as something involving Herbet and thought that Miss Havisham would make her mind to do something useful and good for Herbert.

 

VI. Analysis of personality

P68. The she said, ‘I am going to marry him.’

‘It is my decision, not my adopted mother’s,’ she replied coldly. ‘Anyway you’ll soon forget me’

Estella’s face showed no emotion, ...

Estella(personalities): cold and cruel 

P68. ‘Estella, dearest Estella! Don’t let Miss Havisham influence you in this. Give yourself to a better man than Drummle. I can’t bear to think of you with that man’.

     ‘Never!’ I cried passionately. ‘You are part of me, Estella. It’s true that you have hurt me, but I never want to forget you.’ 

Pip(feelings)：desperate, anxious, sorrowful

P69. Why mustn’t I go home? Was I in danger? Was Magwitch in the danger? Suddenly I was afraid.

     I slept very little and so soon as it was light I went to see Wemmick.

     My heart jumped.

Pip(feelings): nervous, worried, scared 

P69. Magwitch was sitting by the fire looking calm and comfortable.

Magwitch(personalities): positive and strong-willed 

P70. Then I added quickly, ‘I will come with you of course.’

I expected him to refuse to go, but he understood that he was in danger.

P71. My feelings at that moment surprised me. I was anxious and sad about leaving him. He no longer filled me with disgust.

Pip(personalities): considerate, emotional  (feelings): anxious and sad

VII.Appreciation of good sentences

本章节在表现Pip收到纸条，得知Magwich可能已经被发现时内心的担忧与紧张时语言表达十分形象，对于指导学生读后续写情绪表达时有很好的指导作用。

一、句式方面

 Why mustn’t I go home? Was I in danger? Was Magwich in danger? Suddenly I was afraid.（P69）

此处使用连续的三个疑问句，生动形象地表现出了Pip打开纸条后丰富的内心世界，突出了他的紧张和焦虑。

二、用词方面

 I rushed back to the street, called a Hackney cab and told the driver to take me to an inn in Covent Garden.

该处使用连续的三个动作“rush”“call”和“tell”，使用动作链详细地阐述了Pip后续的积极应对，衬托出了他的紧张情绪。

 I slept very little and as soon as it was light I went to see Wemmick.

 My heart jumped.

 ‘What about Magwich? Is he alright?’ I asked anxiously.

VIIII.Summary of this chapter

 Before Pip left the country, he went to Satis House with the intention of expressing his deep love to his beloved girl Estella. However, the decision that Estella would get married with Drummle seemed not to have been changed by Pip’s words. One night, Pip got a piece of paper and was told not to come back home. Meanwhile, he was aware that Magwich had been found. Fortunately, Magwich was sent to Clara’s house, where Herbert and Pip came up with a way to help Magwich leave. They would take Magwitch down the river themselves. Later, Pip knew something about Molly and Estella’s identity.
